{What I Learned Today...}

Have you ever had one of those days where you feel like your brain is on hyper-drive from being overloaded with such good, eye-opening information?

Yeah, today was one of those days, and I don't want to forget anything!

1. (From my Sociological Explorations class) The Sociological Imagination is a state of mind - wherein one isn't complacent with the reality presented to them by the "big social forces" in life. It's a state of mind where you recognize the significance history plays in molding the current milieu you interact with on an everyday basis. It's realizing that in order to understand yourself, and your part in history, you must put in the effort to educate yourself and exercise your brain - like any other muscle. (Even typing this is making mine hurt, and I've only just scratched the tip of this metaphorical iceberg!)

2. (from my Social Stratification class) The analysis of social-class is one of the last standing taboos in today's society, because the increasing polarization of individuals discourages one from peering into the murky water of our culture in order to better understand just how stratified we are.

3. (from my New Testament class)

BAR in Hebrew = Son
ABBAS = Father

So, Christ, the literal son of God, The Father, suffered and died so that WE, the sons and daughters of The Father (symbolized by the sinner, Barabbas) are forgiven, despite our sins... because Christ's sacrifice frees us.

Also,

GETH in Hebrew = Press
SEMANE = Oil

So, Christ atoned in the garden of Gethsemane, or the garden of the oil press. To get oil from olives (another great symbolic item in the scriptures) you crush a vat full with a giant stone... just as Christ was symbolically crushed with the sins of the world, until he bled.

Dallin H. Oaks gave a talk about blessings (for more information about my church, go HERE), in which he explained the 5 different parts:

Exercise Faith
anoint with consecrated oil (the blood of Christ) - the most important part
Seal
Words (Per Oaks, these are for the comfort of those receiving, the actual blessing has already been sealed.)
Will of the Lord

*The exception would be Father's or Patriarchal blessings, or those who hold keys for revelation

So, we are healed by the symbolic blood of our Savior.

4. (Per my Juvenile Delinquency class, in which we were visited by a group of teenage boys who attend the correction center in the next county over)

Peer counseling is more effective than psychological, self-mediating. (for adolescents)
when held accountable for their actions by peers (those who understand and are going through/have gone through similar struggles), they feel the need to raise their expectations of themselves to better the mini-society they've created with each other.
These kids, who've made mistakes, are very, very intelligent... and have been made more so by this new PPC (Positive Peer Culture) program.
Many of these guys have been to other correction centers (previously) and like this one the best - they say it's been the most effective in helping them realize the impact they have on themselves, and more importantly, those who love and care about them... and the BEST part, was listening to them explain how this program has helped each one realize that there are people out there who actually care, and are concerned for their well-being.
EVERY SINGLE one of them said they can trace their mistakes to the feelings of loneliness, low self-worth, lack of a role-model, and a loss of self to the disintegration of their nuclear family, primarily when it concerned their parents.
I'm so glad to be majoring in Sociology, and to have a future working with children who need care and concern. It makes my future look bright :)

{Silly Girls}

One Monday for FHE (when I was home during the break) we decided to have a Just Dance competition since the family got a Kinect for Christmas... For those of you who don't know, the Kinect videos you following the moves on the screen. So you don't know the dance ahead of time, you just mirror the dancer on the screen and get points for accuracy.

This is how I'm feeling at the moment...

It's 12:30am here in Rexburg, and I have a paper waiting to be written before the sun rises. After that there will be another paper, an exam #1 for class A, an exam #2 for class B, a book to be read, groceries to be bought, networking to be done, meetings to attend, friends to be listened to, research to be found, a few more papers, a cold to be conquered, some quizzes sprinkled on top, and one massive annotated bibliography.

And honestly, all I really want to do is read my new Glamour magazine with Rachael McAdams on the cover, start The Alchemist for an upcoming book club, light a candle, listen to Billie Holiday... oh, and sleep. for hours and hours.

College isn't always this stressful, but it seems like the professors get together and plan the weeks they're going to give us ALL of the assignments. I swear, there's no way it's coincidence...

I guess the only way to get through the sticky parts, is by taking it one day, or hour (whatever one can handle) at a time... at least that's what I keep telling myself :)

{Post Christmas Vaca}

The rest of my stay in AZ consisted of more fun-filled adventures with my family, a pedi+DC date with one of my best (and oldest) friends, beautiful weather and fiery trees (sometimes AZ gets her seasons mixed up), and again, lots of laughter and love.

By the way, I'm so jealous of anyone enjoying sunny weather in the 70's right now (cough cough, Arizonans, cough cough)... The weather is interesting up here in ID... it can't seem to make up it's mind. Some days it's super windy (we're talking 40-50mph winds), and other days it's rainy, sometimes it snows (but hasn't stuck yet) and last night, it was rather beautiful out, a high 40 degrees! haha! So, enjoy it Arizonans... I am a tad bit homesick :)

{Christmas}

I had the most wonderful Christmas vacation with family, friends, and the fun traditions that come with... I made it through finals (thanks to the help of some strong substances, aka: Diet Coke and Chocolate) cleaned the apartment, and hurried home to my beloved AZ...

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were filled with magic like usual, and also (like usual), my stomach hurt from laughing, and my heart was full of love from being around family, friends, and the fun traditions that come with...

{A New Art Form}

It's back to the grind for most of us, as the holidays are over, and I'm back in Rexburg...

However, I wanted to share some beauty with you for the weekend...

{Thanksgiving}

I can't believe Thanksgiving is already over! The much-needed break went by WAY too fast, and I'm already missing AZ and my fam so much... BUT on the up side, I only have 3 weeks left till I'm HOME again and for a good chunk of time! I can't wait to see the friends and family I missed this trip...

Pinetop was wonderful, as always (except we were sad it didn't snow), and my parents, like usual, made sure the holiday progressed perfectly. I couldn't ask for a better family to be a part of!

They're all growing up too fast! Until next time...

{Walking in a Winter Wonderland}

I just wanted to post proof that I AM being social on the weekends... work and school takes up a LOT of time, but it is very important to get out and have fun (as I've learned the hard way).

Last weekend my roommates and I went to a "Yacht" party, we were supposed to dress all classy and WASP like... it was pretty fun trying to find costumes out of our own closets.

Also, the Russian weather has begun!

{A Magical Vacation}

As you all know, last weekend was the annual Oliver Family Disneyland trip... I can't tell you how excited I was to see my family (minus Sass and Chantz) and how sad I was to see it end. But, we had a fabulous time together for a few days, and it's only two more weeks 'till I see them again at the cabin for Thanksgiving :)

Friday was rainy (good for wait time, bad for our image haha) and Saturday wasn't too crowded either. We lucked out this year (besides the fact that my favorite ride, Pirates, was down for construction, boo.) The three little beloveds did so well in their dance performance - I can't believe how old they're getting!!

Clay-Bird and I were so excited to hear that One Republic was having a concert Saturday night!!

Who doesn't love a free concert??

Unfortunately, this is what I had to come back to...

{A Lack of Happenings Round These Parts...}

Yes, last weekend was Halloween... and even though I love the holiday, I didn't do much this year. I think Halloween is more fun when you're with kids.

I did get to watch two of my favorite Halloween movies though (Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus) I'm glad my roomies were as down for these kid classics as I was.

My roommate Chelsi and I went to her family's house a few hours away from Rexburg... they were having their annual craft fair, so we manned the lemonade booth together. It was pretty fun, and there was a ton of cool stuff for sale (not to mention, the best homemade fudge I've ever had the pleasure of tasting!)

The little town was so picturesque (check out their beautiful backyard!) And being with Chelsi's family made me miss mine that much more (alliteration much? muahaha... ok, I'll stop)

BY THE WAY! Tomorrow is the day! The day I head out of Idaho (HALLELUJAH) and into California!!! It's time for the yearly Disneyland trip with la familia. I feel like a kid on Christmas Eve!! Not just because Disneyland is my second favorite place in the world, but also because my favorite people IN the world will be there. (Minus Sassy, becuase of a cheer competition... don't even get me going on that one, I'll probably start crying... oh and Chantz because well, yeah, he's on a mission and all...)

{Instagram Lovin'}

Sass and Mom came to visit two weekends ago... their plane literally turned around in the air and went back to Mesa because it was snowing so hard here! CRAZY! ( I was lovin' it -- the snow)

But don't worry, the plane came back, and we had the best weekend I've had in a long time :)
I was so grateful to have these two visit me. I love them so much -- we went to a movie, shopped, ate yummy food and laughed until we were too tired to stand.
THAT's what moms and sisters are for...

It's been so beautiful up here with Grey skies and hot cocoa! Everyone keeps warning me that I'm going to get sick of it (and maybe I will), but for now, I'm in love...

GNO last weekend with my roomies...

One of my roommates (Chelsi) and I like to take walks every day to get hot cocoa at the gas station...

For the record, QT > Maverick EVERY DAY! (deal with it)

The scenes of Fall around here are picturesque, and I can't help snapping up every one (sorry Instagram friends!)

My Mom knows that I love anything pirate-y and got me this super cool skeleton for Halloween (although,let's be real... I'll probably keep it up all year round!)

Rexburg has it's perks... but sometimes I just roll my eyes and sigh sighs of frustration! I mean seriously?? No texting in crosswalk? The rules here are ridiculous (and absurd).

The amazing shake I had from Sammy's... there's a pumpkin cupcake blended in! NOM

My roommates are as in love with gossip/fashion magazines as I am... they make the rounds in this house!

The best card I've ever received in the mail (which is, by the way, my favorite form of communication) - Thanks Kara!!

It's been raining here... and I love it!!! (first snow was last night, huzzah!)

The all time, best Fall movie... and I cry at this part... every time! (such a sap)

I had to document the first boot-wearin' day!

Can you see the red leaves? They're hiding, but they're there!

My Halloween/October nails

Lastly: yesterday it was raining (hard) but I had to go to the job fair for one of my classes. They said "business attire" so I (happily) donned my new trench coat! I was so excited :)

(however, I was less excited about hiking the hill in my heels, while it was raining... but I just couldn't sacrifice the whole outfit because my feet hurt... so hike in heels, I did!)

{Last Weekend... a Week Later}

I know it's already the weekend (again - Hallelujah!) but this one's going to be filled with homework, projects and General Conference...
last weekend was a lot more "active" shall we say.

The Londoner and I went the the apple orchard on campus (the have an apple orchard!! and it's in season!) This is where her fiance proposed (aww) and she wanted to make an apple pie for when he came into town... So we went and picked us some apples! (only .50 cents a pound)

They had every kind imaginable - and some I had never even heard of; including my favorite, the Coop. It's literally spicy! like apple cider, or a fall candle, and it was SO GOOD!

Later that night we went on a bike ride down to Sammy's - a little diner that has local musicians play on the weekend- with our friend Lance. The weather is so nice here right now, and we can get anywhere and everywhere on our bikes - one of my favorite parts of living in a small town.

{Homesick...}

Honestly, this is how I feel a majority of the days now... School up here is HARD, and I was naive for thinking it'd be easier than ASU.
(jokes on me)
Work and school and social shtuffff - it's all very consuming... And, I think it's because I don't have the physical presences of my loved ones to support and lift me up, that it seems even harder than the normal life stresses.

I really miss my family, and although I've met a lot of great people up here, it's just not the same...

I'm trying really hard to keep a positive mental outlook, I mean, there ARE many great things about being in Idaho. And my daily chats with my Mom are literally SAVING my life :) And this blog brings a lot of happiness to me as well.

Onward and Upward

You're probably all annoyed with how much I've been talking/pinning/blogging about this upcoming season... but I'm just so DANG excited!

{Mud... and Some Little Letters}

As you've all probably seen (via FB), I, Chelsey Oliver, participated in Mud Mayhem last Saturday. My roommates may have had to drag me the whole way there (rolling around in dirt is not my cup of tea), but it ended up being really fun... AND my team was one of the winners
(which made it all worth while)

I'm trying to be active and outgoing up here (since I really don't know anyone)... it's hard at times, but I've been blessed to have fabulous roommates. (Seriously, they're all nice, respectful, fun and different) I'll keep you posted if there are any more shenanigans that I participate in...

Also, a lot of bloggers do the "letters" post... I LOVE to read these, and thought I'd try one of my own:

Dear Friday (the 23rd) - you're the day "Fall" begins (or so my calendar says), and I'm so excited to experience you for real this year!

Dear Slanted Bed - I did not pay all this money to rent a room where I'm constantly rolling off you! I am sleep deprived and a little bit desperate... your last day is soon.

Dear Feet - you make me so proud! You're such troopers with all this hiking-in-heels I've put you through up here at BYU-I... I'm not sure how much more you can take, a break is in the near future, I promise!

Dear Kirsty - I am so excited to have found someone who's as obsessed with SATC as I am! Plus you're from London, so that makes you extra cool.

Dear Walmart Bike - I love you! Our rides around town are so much fun! Despite your cheap price tag, you're sturdy (and cute!) and I love experiencing the "crisp" weather together...

Dear Mom - Thanks for putting up with my moodiness and ALWAYS being willing to talk/listen. I love and miss you so much.

Dear Homework - I despise you... sitting over there in my pile of textbooks. My parents were right when they said BYU was the king of busy work, and you're the only proof I need!

Dear Idaho - although I had my doubts, you have a lot to offer... I'm keeping an open mind.

{The Journey - In Color}

As you all know, last week I made the grand move up to Idaho to finish up school. My car was stuffed (literally), the drive was long (although, thanks to my mom, it wasn't bad at all), and the bathroom/treat stops were many... I had so much fun getting things all set up and spending quality time with my best friend. She's truly an amazing person, and has really let me lean on her during this transition (well, she does that all the time, but I've needed some extra support recently).

Without further ado:

Ever since I first started blogging, I've loved Scott Schuman and his work on The Sartorialist

But, as of late, I've also fallen in love with his girlfriend (?) Garance Dore and her work!

They both have such an eye for beauty and the unique in the fashion world. I loved this interview with them taken at the Dolce and Gabbana show 2010 (Men's fashion week in Paris) last year. I love their relationship with each other, and the outlook they have on life...
